Hi - came here after listening to the Red Inker podcast. A really interesting chat and article in amongst all of the Ashes post-Mortem. I really like the idea of 3/4 divisions, fewer games and more overseas players. Given the number of professionals and money, Division 1 county cricket should really be the strongest red-ball standard outside of tests.

One thing I've been wondering recently (especially in light of the situation at Yorkshire) is why counties are not doing more to tap into local communities. When you think that Premier League clubs are scouting the entire world for talented 14 year olds it seems mad what cricketing talent counties might be ignoring on their doorsteps. Maybe transfer fees could spark this kind of development...

The question that is still not answered is what the point of running a first class structure is when no one is watching. I'd take inspiration from 200 years ago and disband county cricket and just rely on private actors putting up prize money. If there is a genuine thirst for long form cricket then there'll be the money for it.

The single biggest reason for the improvement in the England football team has been the investment in coaching from the grass-roots level all the way to the top of the game. However, this has happened at the same time as all but the biggest club have been disincentivised to invest in trying to produce young players by the Elite Player Performance Plan.

I agree on more overseas players. I remember 10-15 years ago one of the big stories was the England football team where going to have to start selecting players from the championship due to the amount of foreign players in the premier league. This has been proven not true and the England football team is improving. Partly because the players are up against the best in the premier league
