Really interesting post, thank you.

wrt Player Analysis, and its absence for players at County level — do you think this is because the County analysts are not willing to share this information with players, or that they aren’t even doing the analysis at an individual level?

Also (if this isn’t proprietary information), what types of analysis are players looking for? Strike rates vs. different opponents and for differing match situations? Bowling economy by line & length?

I am a coach. We have just completed a lengthy series of trials for u13 squads, essentially picking up players dropped from CAGs and keeping them in the game, hopefully helping them back into the CAG pathways. We (try to) help them become better cricketers (technical/aesthetic), but having an idea of the sort of stats that CAG selectors believe in might direct our programmes more effectively.

Hi Andrew,

To answer your first question about player analysis, I don't think it's down to county analysts not being willing to share the info - they would always try to do anything to help a player. I believe the issue stems more from them not knowing how to do it effectively because they're all simply trained to code matches and not necessarily the art of analysis or independent thought.

The types of analysis players want can be quite bespoke. But on a general basis, they're along the lines that you mention.

For your own project it would be really useful to do a deep dive into the skillsets and characteristics which create a successful pro cricketer or at least a CAG pathway player and then focusing your attention and resources on the current players which align with those characteristics.

Interesting re County analysts…I might have said something similar about coaches!

Wrt developing players to match a “CAG profile” — I know some of my colleagues have been involved in CAG coaching, and will certainly have contacts who still are. We can ask.

But taking what you said about County analysts not currently providing any consistent profiling, we might have to do our own analysis of players we know within the pathways, and take that as a baseline.

Certainly an interesting challenge!
