Does your style of play actually get results? Can it work with the players you have?

You’d have thought these were pretty important questions…interesting that they maybe aren’t being asked!

Well written Dan! Good to see this slightly under-appreciated aspect being discussed. Mo Bobat as the Director Of Cricket at RCB has the best chance to do this. Outside MI, who had a director of cricket until Mahela, who has now become the head coach again, Ganguly at Capitals (JSW) and Kumar, who will be the Royals director of cricket: no other IPL franchise has a distanced perspective over such nitty-gritty aspects of the sport. Also, Mo has got experience doing this stuff with creating frameworks over the playing style of the English national team.

One another point, Brighton have been regularly staying in the Top 10 of the PL, due to their players (yes), but similarly aligned managers, who operate in a way including the youngsters to crucial moments, like De Zerbi at Sassuolo and Shakthar & Fabian Hurzeler at St. Pauli.

In this context, Bobat on RCB’s recruitment strategy was relevant — finding players to fit a strategy, rather than chasing stars.
